Sangre de Cristos Mountains These mountains were named the Sangre de Cristos, because of the unique conditions that can sometimes make the mountain tops a beautiful deep "blood red" color during sunset. This particular photo is a rather brighter red sunset shot - it changes day to day. Just one of the spectacular 360 degree views from the land, these mountains border one side of what is known as "the bloodless valley" (because there were never any Calvary/Indian massacres or intertribal Native American battles here). Considered sacred to the Ute/Hopi's and others, it was thought a place a refuge from "the great flood", and their legends depict being hidden safely inside the mountains until the world catastrophe was over. You can still feel an incredible deep peace in the Valley, and even more so at the land.
